The 1896 five dollar silver certificate is generally considered to be the most attractive piece of currency the United States ever issued. These notes are relatively scarce today. The examples that are available are usually in very poor condition or in perfect condition. There isn’t much middle ground. Prices for a note in poor condition could be as little as a couple hundred dollars. Something in perfect condition can sell for over $10,000.
