Gold Certificate – 1905 – Twenty Dollars

Here is the much heralded 1905 $20 gold certificate. Collectors call this a Technicolor note. The nickname derives from the orange background color used for the front of the note. This was the first gold certificate printed during the 20th century. It is also rumored to be a favorite bill of Theodore Roosevelt. George Washington is pictured at the center of the bill. This is the first time George Washington appeared on a $20 bill in United States history. Don’t confuse the 1905 examples for the later ones from 1906 and 1922.  The later versions are multiples more common.  The rare 1905 type is worth thousands of dollars, or more, based on its condition.  We have a full guide for 1905 $20 gold certificates.
